Project Overview

From commencement in August 2007 with the initial project briefings until contractor handover in January 2012, the development of the new Wynnum State School and Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre has taken 4 and a half years for realisation. These facilities have been developed through a planning process including extensive community consultation including forums, displays, public submissions, focus groups and community reference groups to make available a variety of means for feedback. To provide the desired educational vision, a series of key actions were identified, to measure the vision achievements. The key aspirations of the community for the delivery of education at Wynnum includes curriculum delivery and teaching, models of schooling, learning spaces, school operations and communications, enhancing partnerships, community uses and complementary services and sustainability and environmental efficiency. The design of the school buildings take advantage of the sites natural assets including breezes off Moreton Bay and the buildings layout and arrangement maximise passive solar design principles acknowledging orientation, true cross ventilation and daylight requirements that double the regulatory minimum. Accompanied by the use of appropriate and considered building materials and layout, the buildings design has enabled the project to include the first Environmental Education Centre in Queensland to achieve a 6 star rating in design from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), and is the first in Queensland to be assessed for a 6 star rating in construction with GBCA. One and two storey buildings arranged with clear, concise movement between indoor and outdoor learning and play areas reinforce the design notion of a ‘village’ for the junior, middle and senior precincts offering student ownership within the grounds. 

Maintaining the existing attributes of all three schools amalgamated into the new Wynnum Sate School, the physical development needs are addressed via a gymnasium building, in-ground swimming pool, multipurpose courts and sports fields offering students year round outdoor facilities suitable for Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate.
