Project Overview
St John’s Grammar Junior School is located on a long narrow site between Sheoak Road and to the south, the Belair Railway Line and Belair National Park. The C4C occupies a site that slopes steeply towards the railway line allowing for the creation of a much needed weather protected student undercroft. The C4C is elevated with bridge connections to the central student circulation spine of the whole site.
All pedestrian movement within the school passes the covered outdoor learning deck, the display gallery and the ‘bay window’ junior primary story telling area. These areas provide the students, parents and public with a view of the good work that occurs within the C4C.
Integrated within the Centre are the library functions, the school’s ICT Studio, a media room and a wet studio for art, technology and food technology. Individual, small group and group learning occurs throughout the Centre with students able to access studio and production spaces as well as resources in the Library.
The Library space contains a junior primary story telling area, casual reading and small group activity spaces defined by furniture style and types. A lounge area and reading nook overlook Belair National Park. The ICT studio is linked directly to the library to supplement laptop and other multimedia uses.
Learning opportunities in multimedia, video and film studies occur in the ICT Studio and Media Room. Students using the Wet Studio can undertake research in the Library or progress through the ICT Studio to create project work and then film and prepare multimedia productions using the Media Room. Work can be presented in the Library, on the outdoor deck and displayed in the gallery.
The co-location of spaces to create opportunities for integrated learning is enhanced by the design of the Centre for Creativity as a free standing focal point for the school.
