Project Overview
Construction of a new building accommodating an Early Learning Centre and nature based outdoor play areas for 90 children on the ground floor and a flexible learning centre for 90 Upper Primary students on the first floor.
The new ‘Mathwin Centre’ at Westminster School accommodates a new Early Learning Centre for 90 children on the ground floor and flexbile learning centre for Upper Primary Students on the first floor.
The objectives of the new centre were to:
- Support delivery of an expanded early learning centre and care model based on Reggio Emilia principles
- Develop an improved public presence and awareness of the Westminster Early Learning Program
- Provide a flexible learning model for Year 7 with opportunities for alternate uses
- Build on the Westminster ‘Schools within Schools’ model
The Mathwin Centre opened in January 2016 and has successfully delivered the above objectives:
- The Early Learning Centre comprises integrated activity and play based learning areas based around a ‘piazza’
- and community space as the central hub, with seamless transition to nature based outdoor learning areas
- The flexible learning centre comprises three learning areas that can be ‘unzipped’ into an open space learning
- area, or spaces sharing a central commons. Supported by breakout zones, kitchen and learning nooks there are
- diverse combinations of formal and informal learning settings that support a flexible learning program
- The scale and materiality of the new building raises the presence of the Early Learning Centre and signifies the
- Centre as an important contributor to the Westminster education community
- The location and form of the new building at the northern entry point to the Junior School act as a welcoming
- beacon to the Prep School
