Project Overview
The Learning Neighbourhood for Upper Primary at SPW comprises the adaptive reuse of 3 existing buildings delivering contemporary learning environments and specialist facilities within repurposed space. These provide an endless range of opportunities with access to current technologies.
The Vision to nurture students to be happy, knowledgeable and creative young people who care for others and make a positive difference in the world, has consistently underpinned the objectives of progressive redevelopment and refurbishment projects on the historic SPW campus in Glenelg.
The consistent challenge is to achieve best value. This begins with a clear education brief with concise objectives. The Learning Neighbourhood for the Upper Primary cohort comprises a Year 6/7 Centre, Multi-Media Studio, Design and Technologies Studio and a Dance Studio.
The existing two-storey Gillam and Nutter Thomas Buildings are circa 1940 and the Art Centre is circa 1960. The existing spaces are blessed with scale, volume and generous fenestration. The holistic make overs include The HIVE which has added personality to the Year 6/7 Centre complete with a new suite of loose furniture purposefully selected to provide a range of seating, lounge and standing options that are flexible and adaptable.
The rapid response to ever changing demands is made possible because of a long term and trusted relationship where the Architect is part of the client team. In the same manner, a trusted relationship exists with a Construction Manager to facilitate refurbishments at short notice during School Term breaks. These refurbishments have assisted in retaining students for the full Primary experience through to Year 7 at SPW, by making learning irresistible.
