Project Overview
The One Heart Children’s Village project in Turbo, Kenya, was developed to break the cycle of poverty through education and was conceived from the belief that education can improve the lives of disadvantaged children and strengthen communities through providing hope, building key skills and knowledge, and addressing key social issues.
The One Heart Children’s Village project was conceived by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Partner, Dean Landy, as an initiative to break the cycle of poverty through education. Operated and funded by One Heart Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation who, through fundraising, volunteers and donations aspired to create an educational environment for children living in poverty in Kenya, the project was conceived from the belief that education can improve the lives of disadvantaged children and strengthen communities through providing hope, building key skills and knowledge, and addressing key social issues. This initial stage of the project was a purpose-built house and refurbishment of an existing building to accommodate 71 orphaned and abandoned children and a School for 100 local students from Prep to Grade 5.
The new school is part of an overall masterplan for the village, which also incorporates the homestead and village farm, with the aim of becoming completely self-sustainable. The School’s education model is to provide holistic care in a family environment, not just providing a ‘Band-Aid’ fix of a single meal or a few lessons, but providing a solid base of love, safety, and a supportive environment for students together with access to education in a context where they can actually concentrate and excel. The school facilities, together with the Children’s Village as a whole, provide a holistic environment that supports children with a safe and stable living environment, teaches students how to create an environmentally, financially and socially sustainable way of life, and also provides students with the opportunity to learn in a traditional school setting, giving them hope for a brighter future.
The Primary School is the first stage of the One Heart Village school development with the vision to grow and cater for up to 100 orphaned children and 300 underprivileged local children. The School provides a supportive learning environment for students as well as a platform for teachers to develop their teaching skills and create new programs for students.
One Heart School offers an exciting and welcoming learning environment that supports the schools ultimate mission to break the cycle of poverty through education and provide hope for underprivileged children.
