Applications close for the 2027 Mayfield Project

Applications have now closed for the 2027 Mayfield Project, with the next cohort of Mayfielders set to begin their journey later this year.
The Mayfield Project brings together emerging professionals from across Australasia working in education, architecture, design, planning, consulting, policy and the broader learning environments sector.
For the 2027 Project, participants will explore some big questions facing education and learning environments today:
In an age of AI and constant reinvention, what in learning actually endures?
What if the best learning environments aren’t about the latest trend – but about what we choose to protect?
What does education today actually demand of the spaces we design and teach in?
Applications for the 2027 cohort closed on Friday 28 August 2026, following a month long expression of interest period. All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by 19 October 2026.
What happens next?
The selected Mayfielders will take part in a program spanning late 2026 and 2027, combining online collaboration, research and face-to-face experiences.
The cohort will come together through activities including the 2026 Regional Day Out EMPOWER in Hobart, a dedicated face-to-face Mayfield workshop in Sydney, and ongoing online research and collaboration.
Their work will culminate at LEA’s 25th Annual Conference 2027 BELONGING, being held in Sydney | Gadigal Country from 5–7 May 2027, where the Mayfielders will present their findings to the wider LEA community in a dedicated keynote session.
Beyond the Conference, Mayfielders will be encouraged to remain connected with LEA through their local Chapters, committees and regional activities. Each participant will also receive a 20 month LEA membership, supporting their continued involvement in the learning environments community.
Building the next Mayfield cohort
The Mayfield Project is designed to create connections across disciplines and geographies, giving participants the opportunity to challenge established thinking, undertake collaborative research and contribute new perspectives to the future of learning environments.
