Christian Brothers College – Junior School Campus Site Visit
25 Apr 2013
About 35 people came to the site visit to see an outstanding example of modern education and to hear the Principal, Noel Mifsud, describe the school’s strategy for boys’ learning in this interesting building which involved the partial demolition of the existing school, and relocating the students while the new premises were built.
The school which was initially established in 1878 has three campuses and this one for R-6 has 400 students. It celebrates its boy students and how they learn by providing colour, light, technology, and bespoke furniture. It is highly visible to the community with windows which look out (and allow locals to look in) to the busy street adjoining.
Learning in this school takes into account multiple intelligences, so there is a focus on the arts, and also on science and maths. The central library resource centre provides a wide range of resources, moveable furniture and an interactive ICT system. The school’s values are in signage and integrated into art work and objects throughout the building. The chapel has an indigenous design to reflect the creation story and acknowledge the Kaurna people and the Christian Brothers who were the founding fathers for the school.
The school building was designed by Swanbury Penglase Architects (CEFPI members Eric Swanbury and Kon Michael) in conjunction with the school and its community and Alex Bennett from the Catholic Education Office was partially funded by the BER program was partially funded by the BER program.
