Australian Design Takes Centre Stage at A4LE Conference
21 Oct 2024
The winners of the 2024 Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) awards were announced last week at the 2024 LearningSCAPES Conference held in Portland, Oregon.
As part of the Kelley Tanner Award, Hayball, Monash University & Evelyn Scott School won the best new initiative for the project: Enhancing Spatial Literacy at Evelyn Scott School: A Teacher Professional Learning Program.
The Kelley Tanner Innovation Award showcases ideas and initiatives that explore and implement inventive approaches to navigating complex and changing external contexts for teaching, learning, supporting and operating educational facilities.
This award is designed to showcase and celebrate – and even stimulate – innovative and pioneering practices that enhance learning, our profession, and the communities we serve.
The Enhancing Spatial Literacy at Evelyn Scott School Innovative Education Initiative comprises a professional learning programme based on the notion of a participatory action research cycle to create evidence-based activation of the school’s learning spaces, and thus building coherence across curriculum, learning and teaching, and spaces.
This exemplary project addresses the urgent and important issue of how professional learning for teachers working in new or renovated spaces may best occur. In line with the principles and values of future focussed learning spaces, “Enhancing Spatial Literacy” functions collaboratively, is focussed on learning for students, operates transparently and equitably, ensures continuous improvement, and draws generously on multiple forms of knowledge. The Post Occupancy Evaluation enables courage of convictions and provides evidence to underpin ongoing innovation and change.
Daniel Smith, LEA Chair and Deb O'Riley, LEA International Director attended the conference and awards and accepted the award on behalf of the winners. The Evelyn Scott School project also won the Innovative Education Initiative (Category 1) at the 2024 Learning Environments Australasia Design (LEAD) Awards that were presented in May 2024 as part of the 22nd LEA Regional Conference 'AMPLIFY - inclusion learning place'.
Congratulations to Hayball, Monash University & Evelyn Scott School on this fantastic achievement!
