Project Overview

Remotely situated at Heath Park, East Brisbane, the David Turbayne Tennis Centre for Anglican Church Grammar School facilitates a thriving tennis program whilst diversifying the already established sporting precinct’s amenity. The Centre consists of a simple and efficient rectangular plan, clad in fibre cement sheeting and wrapped with profiled metal sheet. Generous decks extend north on all levels, edged by galvanised steel and glass balustrading, further lightening the perimeter as the low profile roof seemingly floats above a grid of slender steel columns. Due to the Centre’s remote siting, the School expressed their desire to shift from the traditional language of the main campus. A new vernacular was developed, drawing inspiration from the ‘Queenslander’ style, utilising materials more appropriate to the building’s scale and function. Although the original brief called for basic amenities – change facilities, store, office, teaching space, canteen – environmental and town planning restrictions shaped the design and unveiled the prospect of transforming the building into a pavilion where spectating would become a primary function.
