Project Overview
The St Paul’s College Multi-Purpose Hall (The Waterford Hall) embraced a sustainable approach to facility design and construction, that now provides students with a progressive and environmentally conducive learning facility. It is a multi-disciplinary facility that supported the school’s vision to deliver state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, in-keeping with the site’s heritage and the natural environment.
The staff and school community of St Paul’s Manly had been waiting for the delivery of a modern and purpose built facility that would accommodate the schools growing need for various activities, as they relate to education in the areas of music, art, theatre, sports and hospitality. The community felt that this project was well overdue, and an investment in the future of existing and future students.
The College is part of the historic St Patrick’s Estate, and includes the historic Archbishop’s Residence and other built and landscape items identified as having exceptional and high historic significance, as noted by the State Heritage Register, and is adjacent to the Sydney Harbour National Park.
At all levels of the project, Avium Projects Pty Ltd planned and conducted their activities with a view to protecting the heritage significance of the site, conserving the natural and physical environment, and avoiding the interruption of the views and landscape of the Manly foreshore.
The finished building met the schools’ expectations and vision to maximise the physical environment, maintain the heritage significance of the site, and allow for an environment for learning to flow in and out of the building and the surrounding natural environment that the site provides. It is an outcome that is specifically tuned to the requirements for education provision of St Paul’s College, that is, an innovative design and construction that utilized valuable natural space, whilst integrating modern learning and sporting facilities into the one complex, that included an approved VET commercial grade hospitality kitchen.
