Project Overview
The learning environment provides spaces for the Year 10 girls to gather and learn. Four learning pods are clustered around a central open learning commons providing opportunity for greater interaction and connection.
The Year 10 Centre offers students the ideal environment to learn together and bond as a community. At Strathcona, Year 9 students spend a year at a dedicated campus in Hawthorn called Tay Creggan. Previously, students returned to the Senior Campus for Year 10 with no special area of their own to share. This new space therefore addressed a pressing need to ease the students’ transition back to the senior Campus, and help them maintain the bonds they forged at Tay Creggan. Assemblies and special guest talks take place in the central breakout area, whilst learning for subjects such as English, History, and Languages take place in the classroom areas. The girls’ independence is encouraged with a kitchenette and seminar rooms for small group work and individual study.
With its large central common area, kitchenette and outdoor terrace, the space has also proven to be the perfect venue for evening parent seminars, which are held once a Term, weekend student conferences, Old Strathconian (past student) reunions, and special guest talks for staff professional development. This has been an unexpected and most welcome benefit of the new Year 10 Centre, making it work hard at all hours of the day, every day of the week.
