Vale Greg Whitby (01/08/1952 – 30/08/2025)
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Greg Whitby AM, an extraordinary leader and innovator in education whose vision and influence transformed learning across Australia and beyond.
Greg’s career spanned nearly five decades, beginning as a classroom teacher and culminating in his role as Executive Director of Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta. Over this time, he became a nationally and globally recognised voice for innovation, equity, and the future of schooling.
His leadership was marked by courage, creativity, and a deep commitment to ensuring that education serves as a vehicle for inclusion, social justice, and transformation. Greg’s work consistently challenged orthodoxy, invited collaboration, and inspired countless educators, leaders, and policymakers to embrace change as a pathway to growth.
His many accolades – from being named one of the Top 100 Global Innovators in Education, to receiving the Order of Australia in 2018, and being awarded a Papal Knighthood (Knight of the Order of St Gregory the Great) – reflect the breadth and depth of his impact. Yet, perhaps his greatest legacy is the culture of innovation and hope he instilled in the communities he served.
Greg leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service, and inspiration that will continue to shape the future of education.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sue, his loved ones, and all who were touched by his life and work.
May he rest in peace.
