Innovation creates agile multi-level learning within Wesley College’s heritage precinct

For the third Learning Environments WA site visit of 2018, Wesley College opened the doors of the recently completed Mildred Manning Science Centre.

Located on the southern bank of the Swan River overlooking the Perth CBD, Wesley College is co-educational up to Year 6 then boys-only to Year 12.

The Mildred Manning Science Centre project comprises technology rich refurbishment and additions to an existing three level science building. By retaining a 1950’s concrete and brick masonry structure the architect was able to negotiate a tight site within the heart of the school campus. Two new building wings were “fused” to the existing building to neatly accommodate an expanded 21^st century sciences programme.

Eight flexible laboratory spaces are dispersed across three levels with operable glazed partitions allowing a multitude of spatial configurations to suit diverse teaching and learning styles. A central atrium provides not only a physical point of connection between labs but also a node for the sharing of information and technology; a large array of 16 television screens feedback multi-media teacher and student inputs as well as data from the various new BMS sensors.

An internal hydroponic green-wall and three story ‘drop-zone’ provide students with unique opportunity for hands-on experimentation within this agile learning environment.
