Making Learning Fun at Guildford Grammar Preparatory School
06 Jul 2017
Located on the east side of the Guildford Grammar School campus, the new preparatory school accommodates Years 1 to 6 and draws on the strong traditions of the Guildford Grammar School and the rich history of the site.
The tour of this project was hosted by LEA's WA Chapter and saw another great turn out of over 30 people who were interested to see the juxtaposition and integration between traditional learning environments and contemporary pedagogy within a primary school context.
Externally, nature play areas encourage active learning through play, by way of sliding, climbing, running and tunnelling. Buildings feature full height glazing visually connects inside and outside.
Internally, pops of colour have been selectively applied to walls, floors and furnishings which give each year group their own identity. Each classroom opens to a generously spaced central collegiate wet area and maximises views out. The central collegiate areas feature natural timber and a neutral material palette, offering relief to the colourful classrooms.
Individual and small group learning is encouraged within each classroom using colourful pods. All upper level classrooms have maximised natural light through the use of skylights. Movable furniture is provided to all learning areas to facilitate different modes of learning.
The Principal has noted that the design of internal and external spaces, and the integration of building and landscaping, has been successful in making learning fun for students while achieving the curriculum requirements.
