Scotch College – Teaching & Learning Building webinar link
22 Jun 2020
WA Chapter and Scotch College hosted a lively webinar on 4 June. The initial idea of a virtual tour of the new Teaching and Learning Building at the college, morphed into an engaging Q& A with presenters and 131 participants.
In this session we heard from their Educators, Architects and Landscape Architects on how they approached this challenging project.
The design process was huge, requiring clear communication and collaboration from all stakeholders. The building focuses on Mathematics and Commerce education and will accommodate approximately 500 students when fully utilised. The spaces consist of staff administration areas, general, multipurpose teaching areas and meeting rooms connected by a learning street that provides a dynamic, active and flexible learning and social environment.
Generous student interactive external areas on the north and south sides allow a range of passive recreational uses. Externally, the material and colour palette draw contextual references from the face brick and limestone cladding of the campus, overlaid with the textural, rhythmic qualities inherent in the traditional House Tartans of the school.
The interior design draws inspiration from the mathematical works of Descartes, Euclid and Alan Turing to provide a subtle thematic layering throughout the building to enable the use of the building as a learning tool. The exterior and landscaping enhances these themes with flowing mathematical lines, and purposeful spaces for students to learn and relax.
