LEA Proud to Support Schoolyard Greenprint Research
15 Jul 2026
Learning Environments Australasia (LEA) is delighted to celebrate the release of the Schoolyard Greenprint, an important new research initiative from the University of Canberra's Health Research Institute that explores how thoughtfully designed outdoor environments can better support student health, wellbeing and learning. LEA was pleased to provide financial support to help this valuable research come to life.
The Schoolyard Greenprint recognises that school grounds are much more than places for recreation. They are spaces where students build friendships, regulate emotions, connect with nature and develop a sense of belonging. Drawing on the voices of more than 1,500 participants, including students, principals, educators, designers and community members from across Australia, the research highlights the critical role that outdoor environments play in supporting young people during their secondary school years.
Published as a suite of four practical resources, Overview, Typologies, Design Guide and Engagement Toolkit, the Greenprint provides schools, designers and communities with evidence-based guidance for planning, designing and evaluating outdoor learning environments that better meet the diverse needs of students. The resources promote a shared design language and place student voice at the centre of schoolyard renewal.
For LEA members, the Schoolyard Greenprint aligns strongly with our commitment to creating learning environments that foster wellbeing, inclusion and belonging. We encourage our community to explore these valuable resources and consider how their insights can inform future school planning, design and advocacy.
