NaturePlay @ Royal Park VIC Wrap Up
22 Apr 2025
The NaturePlay @ Royal Park event in March was a fantastic celebration of the park’s 10th anniversary. Co-hosted by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and the LEA VIC Chapter, the event brought together 25 dedicated attendees, including landscape architects, educators, and architects, who embraced the evening despite the rainy weather.
The event began with an exploration of the play space, where Naomi Barun (AILA) highlighted the significance of nature in play, describing it as the “first teacher” and emphasising its role in wellbeing. Pilar Danlag (Urbania), our event sponsor, also shared insights into the use of natural materials in playgrounds.
A panel discussion followed, led by Skye Haldane, Cathy Kiss AM, and Jeff Nelson from the City of Melbourne. They delved into the project’s origins, stakeholder management, and the importance of early community engagement. Through shared drawings and stories, they revealed the unexpected benefits of the project, such as broader community acceptance and enjoyment beyond the initial target audience.
The conversation continued with a lively Q&A, where attendees explored how the project influenced future initiatives and expanded expectations for inclusive playgrounds.
This collaboration with AILA and the City of Melbourne helped us connect with like-minded professionals and deepen our understanding of the valuable relationship between learning and landscape. Ten years on, the event was a testament to the enduring impact of nature play, highlighting how well-designed outdoor spaces continue to foster connection, inclusivity, and lifelong learning.
