The PLC Middle School, Science & Creative Arts building by Marcus Collins Architects received a Public Architecture โ Architecture Award.
The new PLC Middle School, Science and Creative Arts building provides a large floor area on a small site footprint in an architectural style and in construction materials chosen to be sympathetic to its residential context and consistent with the schools other buildings. It was the third and largest project to date in realising a Master Plan for the school, the essence of which is to provide sufficient facilities for a six stream K to 12 school on a small 4.2 hectare site, one third government area guidelines, without reducing current sports grounds and leaving room for long term future growth. This has been achieved by building small footprint three storey buildings that use the fall of the land to present mainly two storey facades to the residential streets.
Another component of the master plan was to create a limited palette of materials and details, determined by choosing the most successful in existing buildings and using them for all new projects. Also important is that each subsequent building is handled in its own appropriate way within the discipline of the consistent palette.
