Rebuilding Christchurch with a 21st century library

The NZ Chapter explored Christchurch's award-winning Tūranga New Central Library in June.
It was an inspiring event that showcased the changing faces of libraries and gave attendees first hand insight into an accomplished and inspirational community learning facility.
We were fortunate to have two panellists- Paula Eskett, LIANZA president (Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa) and Carsten Auer, one of the architects of Tūranga.
The library as a concept between work and home was discussed along with the thinking that it is okay to use a library as a place for socialising - for coming together in. Another interesting concept was that a library was a space in which you could be alone but together with other people.
We were lucky that Carsten then took us on a personal guided tour of each level pointing out the innovative features of the design, describing for us the consultation involved and the thinking behind the architecture.
A wonderful event, full of great learning, thinking and provocation.
