Following the success of the National conference in Adelaide in May 2014 a series of site visits were held. We visited Glenunga International High School’s new resources wing, the refurbished Mitsubishi site at Tonsley Park where TAFE building and construction trades are integrated with suppliers, and St Mary’s College where the library resource centre looks into the tree tops.
In 2015 the ever-popular site visits will be interspersed with discussion events about pedagogy, architecture and procurement.
All South Australian schools cater for students with a wide range of disabilities, but in some instances specialist services are required.
On 25th March 2015 we will visit Klemzig Primary School for hearing and impaired development. It is world renowned for its bilingual program which integrates Deaf and hearing students and delivers the curriculum in both English and Auslan. All students in the school learn to sign and the school employs a number of staff who are deaf or hearing impaired
The long awaited redevelopment has enabled this innovative program to be delivered in purpose built facilities which incorporate appropriate learning technologies and improved acoustic qualities.
The new building houses four bilingual classrooms with withdrawal spaces, adjacent outdoor learning areas and a speech room as well as a dedicated pre-school for the Auslan Bilingual Preschool, a statewide service for deaf children.
The new building has been cleverly linked to the existing 1960s two storey building which has undergone a spectacular refurbishment as part of the redevelopment. The new light filled resource centre and courtyard is spacious and open. Upstairs, four pairs of classrooms, general learning areas and withdrawal room provide flexible multi-purpose learning spaces.
