The 2nd European Study Tour: a winter learning wonderland

After departing the sunny shores of Australia, 11 of us gathered on the other side of the world in the not-so bleak mid-winter in Copenhagen.

I have had the wonderful opportunity to lead a second LEA Study Tour. The group was comprised of a range of travellers from architecture, education, social and infrastructure sectors. I find with these tours that the dialogue amongst the group members results in a rich professional conversation as we unpack ideas.

The tour started in Copenhagen, visiting unique schools, characteristic of Danish design. We also crossed the Oresund Bridge with a day in Malmo, Sweden. The next stop was Helsinki, visiting a school, university, and community centre, each with a unique perspective on learning.

In Amsterdam, we spent a fun morning at NEMO Science Centre, and a day trip to the beautiful city of Delft, to visit the TU Delft Library and Architecture School. On our next leg we started the UK in Glasgow, learning about local architect Charles Rennie MacIntosh, then onward to London and the annual BETT Education event, attracting thousands of educators from across Europe and the Middle East.

Schools are the main focus of the tour, but there is also so much to learn from a variety of learning environments, universities, museums, libraries and community centres... and a little bit of snow made for a wonderful winter experience.
